Insulators Local 78 Apprenticeship Program

The Local 78 Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee is to train future Insulators to be skilled in all phases of the insulation industry and meet the needs of Local Insulators in Alabama.

Local 78 offers a 4-year Apprenticeship Program with the option for members to continually recertify and update their skills through Journeyman Upgrade Classes and health and safety courses offered regularly. 

Minimum eligibility requirements to apply for the Local 78 Apprenticeship Program:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must have a State issued I.D.
  • Must be drug free
  • A High School Diploma or G.E.D. 

Each Apprentice must have a minimum of 230 hours per year for a total of 921 hours which include Hands on Training, Online and classroom training. In addition to the class room hours, Apprentices are expected to have 2,000 hours per year of On the Job Training (OJT) or On the Job Learning (OJL) for a total of 8,000 hours. 

Local 78 schedules training classes on Saturdays that are held for 8-hour sessions. We schedule  Apprenticeship classes on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays of each month. 

All Local 78 Apprentices are given a set of tools to use while in class and once the program is complete they take their tools with them. 

Recently, the Local 78 Apprenticeship Program was awarded a grant to buy all Apprentices a Chromebook. This will allow each student to complete online training and job tracking tasks.

As part of the Local 78 training program, the following classes are part of every student’s curriculum:

  • 32 Hour Asbestos Worker Initial
  • 40 Hour Asbestos Supervisor Initial
  • 8 Hour Asbestos Worker Refresher
  • 8 Hour Asbestos Supervisor Refresher
  • OSHA-10 and OSHA-30 Classes
  • Fire Stop
  • Professional Craftsman Code of Conduct
  • First Aid/CPR
  • Scaffold Erector Training

Once an apprentice completes the associated hours for the apprenticeship program, he or she will receive a Certificate of Completion from The U. S. Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship.

Applications must be done in person at the Local 78 office located at 2653 Ruffner Road Birmingham, AL 35210. Apprenticeship applications are taken on every Tuesday between the hours of 8:30 am. – 2:00 pm. 

Local 78 performs interviews on a yearly basis and depending on manpower needs. Once your application is on file we will keep your records and make you aware when the opportunity for interviews are scheduled.
